Why Build a Retaining Wall / Benefits of Retaining Walls

Constructing a retaining wall plays a vital role in both landscaping and civil engineering. These structures are specifically designed to stabilize soil, rocks, or other materials, effectively preventing erosion, collapse, or slope failure.

Managing soil erosion: Retaining walls are an effective solution for stabilizing steep slopes, protecting the landscape by preventing soil from being washed away during heavy rainfall and preserving its structural integrity.

Landscape design: Terraced landscapes made with retaining walls can add visual interest and beauty to your property. Additionally, they can be used to build raised garden beds, which is a fantastic way to grow plants in locations with poor soil.

Property Boundary Definition: Retaining walls can be used to define property boundaries and create a clear separation between different areas or neighboring properties.

Increased property value: By enhancing the curb appeal of your home and the overall aesthetics of your landscaping, a well-built and aesthetically pleasing retaining wall can raise the value of your property.

Create Usable Space: Retaining walls can be used to level out uneven terrain, creating flat, usable areas for gardens, patios, driveways, or other landscaping features. This can increase the functionality and aesthetics of your outdoor space.

Manage Water Drainage: Retaining walls can be designed to manage water runoff by directing it away from your property. This can help prevent flooding and water damage to structures.

Support for structures: Retaining walls can also offer structural support for parts of your property that are vulnerable to landslides or collapse, providing an additional measure of security and stability.

Our knowledgeable team has expertise in working with a variety of materials to construct retaining walls that are durable, built to last, and visually striking. Retaining walls can be crafted in numerous materials, shapes, sizes, and colors, and can be designed to suit your needs—whether level, curved, sloped, or cascading. We collaborate with you every step of the way to choose the ideal materials, create a layout that fits your space perfectly, and transform your outdoor area with careful craftsmanship and attention to detail.

Retaining Wall Construction

Building a retaining wall starts with establishing a solid and stable foundation, which is essential for ensuring its strength and durability. Depending on the type of wall, this foundation may include compacted gravel or a concrete footing. Careful planning and precise execution are key to creating a long-lasting structure. As skilled retaining wall contractors, we have the knowledge and experience to handle projects of all sizes with precision, ensuring stability and maximizing the wall’s lifespan. For walls exceeding 4 feet in height, additional reinforcement—such as anchor systems or geogrid—is often necessary to strengthen the structure and maintain its integrity.

Retaining Wall Drainage

When constructing a retaining wall, proper drainage is essential for its stability and longevity. Without adequate drainage, water can build up behind the wall, creating hydrostatic pressure that can lead to cracks, bulging, or even collapse. In colder regions, poor drainage can also cause frost heaving, where freezing water expands and shifts the wall. A failing wall not only risks damaging your property but can also endanger neighbors and nearby structures.

To prevent these issues, we design and implement effective drainage systems as part of every project. This includes using drainage rock, perforated pipes to redirect water, and geotextile fabric to prevent clogging while ensuring filtration. As skilled retaining wall builders, we prioritize drainage to guarantee your wall remains strong, stable, and safe for years to come, even in harsh conditions.

Types of Retaining Walls

Retaining walls come in various styles and materials to suit different needs and landscapes. Gravity walls, made from heavy materials like concrete, stone, or blocks, rely on their weight to hold back soil. Reinforced walls use additional support, such as steel or geogrid, for added strength and stability. Cantilever walls, typically built with reinforced concrete, utilize leverage to counteract soil pressure. Segmental retaining walls (SRWs), constructed with interlocking blocks, are popular for their durability, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal. For a more natural look, timber or wood retaining walls provide a rustic option, though best suited for smaller projects. Anchored walls, which use cables or rods for extra support, are ideal for taller or heavily loaded structures. With so many options available, retaining walls can be tailored to meet your specific needs in terms of function, material, and design.

Explore the different types and styles below:

01

Concrete Block (Alan Block) Retaining Walls

The most common material used for retaining walls is small block retaining walls, also known as Allan block or concrete block retaining walls. While they are the most popular choice, they are not the cheapest option. However, small concrete block walls provide excellent durability and longevity, making them a great investment for the cost. These walls are constructed using interlocking blocks combined with layers of geogrid to ensure strength, stability, and a high level of soil retention. They are highly versatile and can be designed to follow curves, angles, and unique shapes.

Repairs

One major advantage of small block walls is that they are relatively easy to repair, adding to their long-term practicality.

Installation

Another major advantage is their ease of installation. Allan Block walls are mortarless and use interlocking systems, making them faster to construct, causing you less disruption.

02

Concrete Retaining Walls

Among the many options available, concrete retaining walls are considered the most durable and are increasingly becoming a popular choice due to their modern look and unmatched strength. All of our concrete retaining walls are constructed with a steel reinforcement grid and a concrete footing to ensure maximum stability and longevity. Concrete walls are also highly versatile, as they can be shaped into curves, straight lines, or custom designs to suit your landscape.

Concrete walls can be enhanced with materials like natural stone or brick veneers for a more traditional or rustic look. While concrete retaining walls are typically more expensive due to the specialized tools, equipment, and materials required for their construction, they offer long-term value through their strength, durability, and ability to withstand harsh environmental conditions.

Durability

Concrete retaining walls are incredibly strong and long-lasting, capable of withstanding significant pressure from soil and water. This makes them ideal for preventing erosion.

Versatility

Another great aspect of concrete retaining walls is that they are highly versatile in design they can be customized to fit various shapes, sizes, and styles. They can be poured into curves, straight lines, or unique designs, and finished with smooth, textured, or decorative surfaces to match modern or traditional aesthetics.

Cost Effective Over Time

Once installed, concrete retaining walls require minimal upkeep and, unlike wood or stone, remain stable over time, making them a durable, low-maintenance, and cost-effective long-term investment despite their higher initial cost.

03

Wood Retaining Walls

Wood (or timber) is the most affordable material for building retaining walls. To ensure maximum strength and soil retention, all of our wood retaining walls are reinforced with “dead men,” which are horizontal supports anchored into the ground behind the wall. Wood retaining walls are a great choice for creating a rustic, cozy, and inviting look, especially on sites with limited access where other materials may be harder to use. However, while wood retaining walls are the most economical option, they have the shortest lifespan due to their susceptibility to rot and decay. Properly constructed, our wood retaining walls can last up to 25-30 years.

Affordability

Wood is one of the most cost-effective options for retaining walls, making it a great choice for budget conscious projects.

Construction

Wood retaining walls are can often times be faster and easier to construct, particularly when compared to heavier materials such as concrete or stone. Their lightweight nature simplifies the installation process.

04

Stone Retaining Walls

Stone retaining walls offer the most natural and authentic appearance compared to other materials used for retaining walls. The stone, or natural rock, is quarried with sharp edges, which helps improve the wall’s overall stability. Because the stone is quarried, each wall is completely unique, ensuring no two stone retaining walls look the same. One major advantage of stone retaining walls is their ability to allow water to drain through the gaps between the rocks, reducing pressure behind the wall. While the cost of blasted rock retaining walls is competitive, they require larger machinery and greater site access for excavation and installation.

Durability and Longevity

Stone retaining walls are known for their incredible durability and strength. They can withstand harsh weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, and moisture, without losing their structural integrity.

Low Maintenance

Stone retaining walls need minimal maintenance. In contrast to other materials that can decay, bend, or corrode, stone walls maintain their stability and aesthetic charm for many years, making them a smart option for homeowners.

05

Garden Retaining Walls (Planters)

Garden retaining walls and planters serve a dual purpose in landscaping by providing both structural support and aesthetic enhancement. These walls help to manage soil erosion while creating tiered planting areas that maximize space and improve drainage. Constructed from materials like stone, small blocks, or concrete, they can be designed to complement the surrounding landscape. Garden planters built into retaining walls allow for the cultivation of a variety of plants at different heights, adding visual interest and promoting a lush, vibrant garden environment. Overall, they are an excellent way to blend functionality with beauty in outdoor spaces.

Erosion Control

Garden retaining walls effectively prevent soil erosion by holding back soil on slopes, thereby preserving the integrity of your garden and preventing the loss of valuable nutrients.

Increased Planting Space

By creating tiered levels, garden retaining walls expand the available planting area. This allows for greater diversity in plant selection and the opportunity to create unique garden designs.

06

Boulder Retaining Walls

Boulder retaining walls require ample access for large excavators to position the heavy stones effectively, ensuring a sturdy construction. These walls allow for natural water drainage through the gaps between the boulders, helping to manage runoff and prevent erosion. Aesthetically, boulder walls provide a rugged, organic look that blends seamlessly with the landscape, showcasing the unique shapes and textures of each stone. However, because boulders are not typically quarried, they often lack distinct edges, making construction more challenging and requiring skilled craftsmanship to achieve both stability and visual appeal.

Natural Beauty

Boulder retaining walls provide a rugged, organic look that seamlessly blends with the surrounding landscape. Their unique shapes and textures enhance the visual interest of outdoor spaces, making them a popular choice for those seeking a natural appearance.

Very Effective Water Drainage

The gaps between the boulders allow for natural water drainage, helping to manage runoff and prevent erosion. This feature reduces the risk of water buildup behind the wall, which can lead to structural issues and soil erosion.

Additional Wall Types We build

We also build a few other types of retaining walls:

Green walls are created by stacking synthetic bags filled with a mixture of sand and soil. Because sand is porous, this design allows for a passive drainage system, enabling water to flow through the wall. Over time, plants and vegetation will grow on the wall, giving it a vibrant and natural look. Green walls are an excellent choice for projects with limited access and are ideal for areas with existing roots, as the roots will not disturb the structure of the wall.

Gravity walls, also known as gravity retaining walls, function differently from other retaining wall systems, such as cantilever walls or anchored walls. These walls hold back soil solely through their own weight, making them relatively simple in design. However, they can be prone to toppling if not constructed properly. Materials like small concrete blocks or Allan blocks are commonly used for gravity walls. They are best suited for applications like garden block walls, where there is minimal pressure exerted against the wall.

Concrete cantilever retaining walls consist of a wall and a base slab. The backfill usually covers most of the base slab. These walls prevent collapse by using the weight of the earth to act as a lever on the base slab. The cantilever construction method is the most common way to build concrete retaining walls.
